Mac Allister keeps Liverpool on top
Liverpool picked up their fifth win in five Champions League games by beating Real Madrid (2-0) at Anfield.
Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was key to the home side's victory, scoring his second goal of the European campaign.
Liverpool opened the scoring shortly after the start of the second half (52') with a shot from the heart of the box from Conor Bradley.
The Argentinos Jrs. player scored his ninth goal in 65 games with the Reds.
"It's always nice to score when you play against rivals like Real Madrid, but the most important thing is that we won and that we dominated the game," he told British television after the match.
Mac Allister, a permanent fixture in Arne Slot's lineup, played all 90 minutes of the match.
Uruguay's Darwin Núñez and Colombia's Luis Díaz were also in the starting lineup.
For the visitors, Uruguayan Federico Valverde started and played all 90 minutes of the match, while Brazilian striker Endrick entered in as a second-half substitute.
Liverpool consolidated its position at the top of the table with 15 points, two more than second-placed Inter Milan (13).
Real Madrid, meanwhile, slipped to 24th in the standings after suffering two consecutive defeats.
"It's nice (to lead the table with a perfect record), but at the same time it doesn't mean anything because it's only the first phase (of the tournament). We are happy with our performance, which is the important thing," said Mac Allister.
Cabral and Di Maria keep Benfica alive
Benfica came from behind twice to secure a victory away win over Monaco (3-2) and managed to stay alive in the continental competition.
Brazilian attacker Arthur Cabral and Argentine midfielder Ángel Di María were key to the Portuguese side's turnaround.
After coming on as a substitute just after the hour mark (65), Cabral put the score at 2-2 (84) with a powerful header from a cross by Ángel Di María.
A few minutes later (88), the Argentine veteran intervened again to give the 'Eagles' peace of mind with another fine pass into the box to allow Zeki Amdouni score with a header to put the final score at 3-2.
Cabral, who scored for the first time in the competition, has 15 goals in 57 matches played with Benfica.
For his part, the Argentine midfielder reached 15 seasons assisting in the Champions League.
"I'm very happy for the win; we needed it. They are three crucial points after losing two games. We needed to reverse the situation," said the Argentine after being named UEFA's 'Man of the Match.'
Di Maria started and completed 91 minutes before being replaced. Also starting was Argentine defender Nicolás Otamendi, who wore the captain's armband and played the entire match.
Brazilians Vanderson and Caio Henrique were in action for the home side.
Benfica put an end to a streak of two defeats in a row, moving up to 14th place in the standings with nine points.
