Carlos Narváez
The Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 on Wednesday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto in Major League Baseball action. Venezuelan Carlos Narváez hit a three-run home run.
Boston achieved its second consecutive victory and remains in playoff position, gaining some breathing room over the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros, its closest pursuers.
Narváez, 26, came up at the right time for the Red Sox, in the eighth inning, after a few days of poor results at the plate, batting for a .120 average with three hits in his last 25 chances.
In another result, the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-1 and tied for the lead in the American League East division with the Blue Jays.
Aaron Judge connected on a pair of homers, totaling 51 on the season for the Yankees, and is 10 behind Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners, who leads the Majors.
The White Sox suffered their 100th loss of the year.
On the other hand, the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-1 and lead the American League Central division with 86 wins and 72 losses.
Dominican José Ramírez drove in two runs with two hits, now totaling 84 RBIs on the season.
The Tigers were still unable to dig themselves out of an untimely slum, and have lost eight games in a row in the middle of the fight to qualify for the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets 10-3 on a day they totaled 11 hits.
The Mets got down 5-0 in the third inning and could not recover.
While Chicago has already qualified for the postseason, the Mets have lost ground to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cincinnati Reds, who are both in contention for the last wild card berth.
Mariners win the AL West
The Seattle Mariners defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-2 and were crowned American League West division champions for the first time since 2001.
Seattle had an offensive explosion that included five home runs, including two by Cal Raleigh and one by Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez.
Luis Severino's day
It was a painful loss for Houston, which not only saw the Mariners crowned in their division but needs help from other teams to make the playoffs.
If the Detroit Tigers don't lose two of their last four games, Houston will be out of the postseason.
