World No. 2 Coco Gauff, fresh off her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in early June, was knocked out on Tuesday as she began her Wimbledon campaign.

The 21-year-old American lost 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 to Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska (42), just weeks after an early exit at the WTA 500 in Berlin, wrapping up her brief grass-court season without a win.

Yastremska, a 2024 Australian Open semifinalist, secured her first win over Gauff in four meetings. She will face Russian Anastasia Zakharova (No. 95), who advanced from qualifying, in the second round.

It’s only the third time in the Open Era that the Roland Garros champion has played in the first round of Wimbledon in the same year, following Belgian Justine Henin in 2005 and Italian Francesca Schiavone in 2010.

Wimbledon is the Grand Slam where Gauff has struggled to advance, never making it past the round of 16.
