Lou Lopez makes history: first Mexican woman drafted in WNBA

The Hispanic community is making history in U.S. sports. Mexican player Lou López Sénéchal was selected in the WNBA Draft and will start next season as a forward for the Dallas Wings, Texas' lone franchise. The WNBA season begins on May 19.

Mexico is already looking forward to Lou Lopez's debut, which could come on May 20 in the Wings' season opener against the Atlanta Dream at the College Park Center.

López was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. When she was five years old, her family decided to move to Grenoble, France. In 2018, she moved to Connecticut, where she had her first experience in American college basketball at Fairfield University for four seasons.

In 2022, she transferred to the University of Connecticut (UConn) to play for the legendary Connecticut Huskies. She averaged 15.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
