Susan Sarandon regrets her antisemitic speech: "A terrible mistake"
In a post on social media, the actress acknowledged the history of anti-Jewish persecution and apologized for "hurting people with this comment."
Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon apologized Friday for her controversial comments last month about the persecution of Jews while she was at a pro-Palestinian march.
"There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country," the actor said. Her statements sparked a wave of criticism. She was even dropped by Hollywood UTA, the talent agency that had been representing her since 2014.
"This phrasing was a terrible mistake, as it implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution when the opposite is true," she admitted in a social media post. She also recognized the long history of anti-Jewish persecution - including genocide in Europe and the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh - "I deeply regret diminishing this reality and hurting people with this comment."
