San Francisco sets new high for drug overdose deaths
Eighty-four people died from overdoses in August in the city. Fentanyl was the cause of 66 of them.
Deaths from accidental drug overdoses in San Francisco reached 84 people in August, establishing a new high for the city for a single month, which was previously 83 from January of this year. According to the report, 66 of the deceased died from fentanyl. So far 563 people have lost their lives from overdoses in San Francisco this year alone.
Forecasts project that 2023 will set a record for drug deaths
The worst year on record for drug overdoses in the city was 2020, when 725 people lost their lives. This year is projected to surpass San Francisco's annual record for accidental drug overdose deaths. In 2022, there were 647 deaths, and there were 641 in 2021. The city began keeping this data in 2020.
San Francisco is investing millions of dollars in the fight against drug addiction. It even created a "safe space for drug consumption" that lasted just eleven months due to the cost and complaints from neighbors about the damage being caused by drug users.
