A large majority of Americans are in favor of designating Mexican cartels as "terrorist groups". In addition, 79% consider them as "a serious threat to the country."
Kidnapping in Matamoros
This is indicated by the results of a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey conducted in March. According to the poll, 69% of respondents agreed with the cartels being included in the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) group. Acceptance of this measure soars to 80% among Republican voters, while Democratic supporters back it by 65%.
In addition, 79% of survey participants indicated that they believe these criminal organizations pose a serious threat to the United States. Some 55% rated it as "very serious." The survey came shortly after the news of the kidnapping and murder of several U.S. citizens in Matamoros, Mexico.
