More than 181,000 illegal immigrants crossed the southern border in August
With two months left to close the fiscal year, 1,930,000 entered the country illegally, more than the entire 2021.
The Border Patrol apprehended more than 181,000 immigrants who crossed the southern border illegally in August, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. This is a slightly lower record than in August 2021 when the number of illegals intercepted was 196,514, but much higher than the 47,283 illegals who were arrested at the border with Mexico in 2020.
In total, more than 1,930,000 illegal entrants were arrested this 2022 and, with one month left in the fiscal year (October), that's more than those arrested in all 2021 (1,659,206 people).
Despite last month's high figure, it is still far from the peak recorded in May, when 224,397 illegal immigrants were intercepted.
Since Biden has been president, 5,000,000 illegals have entered the country, of which one million managed to escape controls and remain undetected. State authorities denounce a lack of immigration control by the Biden Administration and speak of a border "invasion".
Of the four states that border Mexico, it was in Texas where the most illegal immigrants were arrested. The Border Patrol apprehended some 117,000 illegal immigrants in August, about 3,800 per day.
Lives at risk
Not only is the number of illegal border crossers increasing, but so is the death toll. In 2022, more than 600 people lost their lives trying to enter U.S. territory, making the southern border the deadliest in the world.
In recent days, nine people died attempting to cross the Rio Grande last Thursday near Eagle Pass, Texas.
Drug trafficking
One of the most common crimes in the country's southern border is drug trafficking. According to published official CBP data, a total of 553,000 kilograms of drugs were seized as of July 2022.
This record is still far short of the 914,000 kilos of drugs intercepted in 2021, with two months left to complete the full fiscal year of 2022.
The concern revolves around more potent drugs that have been seized recently, such as fentanyl. The Border Patrol seized enough fentanyl in July to kill 470 million people, nearly 150% of the entire U.S. population.
Biden's inaction
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz acknowledged a few days ago that the immigration crisis is due to Biden's "inconsequential" policy. In addition to this assertion, Brandon Judd, president of the Border Patrol Union, criticized Biden for "putting politics ahead of life" and warned that this fiscal year will end with 800 deaths at the border.
