England make a clean sweep of Senegal (3-0) to face France in the quarterfinals
The European team had no major problems overcoming the African team in a match that had never been played before.
Maybe for the reason that they are the creators of soccer, maybe because they hold Soccer above all other sports, England dominated their national game with a 3-0 victory over Senegal tonight. Next up, a stellar match in the quarterfinals: England against France.
England and Senegal have never met in a World Cup before and, when they did, the English were superior. The European team surprised fans at the last minute by announcing the absence of Raheem Sterling due to family issues. The Chelsea attacker, who had started the first two games and had a goal and an assist was withdrawn before the kick-off. In spite of the loss, England was able to adapt and overcome in the best way possible, in order to achieve its objective.
The first goal came in the 38th minute from Jordan Henderson, who scored his third goal with his national team. The English continued to press and Kane appeared, but the captain was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The referee had just added two additional minutes to the end of the first half when Kane was presented with another opportunity, this time, he didn´t falter and the fans were chanting again.
The first half showed more ball possession for the Europeans. In terms of shots on goal, the English had four, while Senegal had only two.
The African team made three changes for the second half and tried a couple of shots at the opponent's goal that were not reflected positively on the scoreboard.
In the 57th minute came England's third, thanks to an assist from Foden -as with the second- setting up a back pass for Sake to slot into the back of the net.
England made a double change in the 64th minute, with Foden and Saka being substituted for Grealish and Rashford. Southgate rang in soome more changes, however, the scoreboard did not change. Before the end of the game, many people had already left the stadium, especially fans of the African team.
One moment that caught the eye prior to the opening whistle was the yellow band with the number 19 on the arm of Senegal's Koulibaly; he did so in honor of the late Papa Bouba Diop, who scored Senegal's first goal in 2002 wearing that number.
England continue on their way to the final of this World Cup. It has participated 16 times in the World Cup, although it has only managed to win the title on one occasion, in 1966 (held in England). They will now face defending champions France in the quarterfinals.
