Disney files lawsuit against DeSantis
The entertainment company is responding to the Florida governor's efforts to take away its self-governing power in the Reedy Creek special district.
Disney Entertainment Company filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. According to the indictment, the company would be the target of a political campaign by Republicans aimed at damaging it. They believe that the Florida government is acting in an "anti-business" manner.
The Walt Disney Company owns a large theme park outside Orlando, Florida, located in the Reedy Creek business district. Along with DeSantis, Disney also sued the board appointed by the governor to oversee the Walt Disney World park.
The previous week, Florida's governor announced a bill to end the company's special rights in the business district. DeSantis' intention is that Disney will no longer enjoy home rule powers in the Reedy Creek district. "I'm not going to allow Disney to have their own government in Central Florida. They're going to live under the same laws as everyone else," DeSantis said when he introduced his initiative.
DeSantis also announced that he will impose new taxes on the entertainment giant. According to his press conference, Walt Disney World's monorail, transportation systems and attractions have been able to evade external inspections. However, the new regulations to be implemented by DeSantis will overcome this exception and, in addition, will impose enhanced oversight to ensure that they comply with all measures in place.
In the midst of litigation between the Florida government and Disney, other states such as North Carolina proposed to the company to move its gigantic theme park to their state. There, Democratic legislator Michael Garrett, introduced in the state Senate the Mickey Freedom Restoration Act to invite Disney to North Carolina.
