New legal troubles for Trump: Carroll sues him again for defamation and sexual assault
The presidential candidate faces six criminal charges of sexual assault for the alleged rape of the journalist in 1995.
A preview of the new defamation lawsuit against former President Donald Trump could complicate things for the now candidate to occupy the White House in 2024. Lawyers for former Elle columnist E. Jean Carroll included six criminal allegations of sexual assault in the lawsuit, including the reporter's accusation that the tycoon raped her in a Manhattan store dressing room in 1995. The civil lawsuit will likely be filed as soon as a week.
This is not the first time the writer has made these accusations public. She published a book in 2019, while Trump was president, in which she gave her account of the events. Trump denied Carroll's story, claiming she was a liar who, moreover, was not his "type." The former Elle columnist tried to sue him for defamation, but since Trump was president at the time, the Justice Department was able to dismiss the complaint on legal grounds.
After this, it seemed that the matter had been settled. However, Trump's Oct. 12 post on Truth Social once again fanned the flames:
Key date: Nov. 24
The lawsuit, which Carroll's lawyers shared, will be filed on Thursday, Nov. 24, the same day that New York's Adult Survivors Act goes into effect.
Lawsuit E. Jean Carroll by Israel Duro
This law, enacted by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, allows adult victims of sexual assault to file civil lawsuits, even if the statute of limitations for the crime has passed. If the lawsuit goes forward, Trump could be convicted of the alleged rape of E. Jean Carroll 22 years later.
