Washington's Democratic mayor calls for help in the face of the flood of immigrants
Muriel Bowser assures that the wave of foreigners that continues to arrive in the city has reached a "tipping point".
The mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, has requested that the National Guard be activated in the state to attend to the 4,000 immigrants she claims were sent from Texas and Arizona by bus, as reported by NBC on Thursday .
The official said that the situation is unsustainable because they do not have sufficient resources to assist the people who are arriving. She described immigration as a "humanitarian crisis" that has reached a "tipping point".
Bowser requested the National Guard's assistance in a letter to the office of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin. She has also sent a request to White House advisors dated July 22, stating that "the immigration crisis facing our city and our country through the callous political gamesmanship of the governors of Texas and Arizona must be addressed at the federal level."
For months, migrants have been bused to Washington, D.C., from Texas and Arizona, but aid groups say there are not enough resources available.
While Arizona's Republican governor, Doug Ducey, has not admitted to sending immigrants to the capital, he noted "that President Joe Biden's policies have placed an overwhelming burden on Arizona communities. It is fitting that these liberal mayors finally speak out on this humanitarian crisis once it affects their communities."
New York's Democratic mayor: immigrants are a "real burden"
A few days ago, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement that immigrants are becoming a "real burden" on the city. The Democratic official emphasized that "we are currently experiencing a notable increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving from Latin America and other regions," which is why he asked the federal government for funds to address the situation.
Adams asked the White House for help in taking in the more than 2,800 people who have recently entered the city's shelter system, explaining that immigrant assistance programs are overburdened. "There's a whole series of things that this is going to produce. We need help," the mayor said at a public appearance.
The New York mayor also blamed Texas and Arizona for sending the immigrants.
"[Adams] has no idea what is happening on our country's southern border," denounced Doug Ducey, on Twitter. "Our communities have long been under stress because of the border crisis. The real lack of compassion comes from the Biden Administration, which has turned a blind eye."
