Pablo Milanés dies at the age of 79

The Cuban artist, known for his song 'Yolanda' among other hits, co-founded the Nueva Trova Cubana and was critical of the Cuban Revolution.

Pablo Milanés died on Monday at the age of 79 in Madrid (Spain). Born in the city of Bayamo (Cuba), the Cuban singer-songwriter suffered from cancer for several years and had been hospitalized in the Spanish capital since November 12, according to his representatives. Due to his illness, he had to cancel several performances in Spain and throughout the Americas.

Founder of the Nueva Trova Cubana, together with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola, Milanés released more than 40 albums throughout his musical career. His biggest hit was Yolanda (1970), a song dedicated to his then partner, which he released as a single.
