Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. According to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, the Democratic senator from Connecticut is awake and responding well to treatment.

In the aforementioned statement, Herwitt reported that the senator began to feel numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game on Saturday, Oct. 31. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered that he had suffered a stroke.

"He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery," Herwitt added.

Murphy, 53, served in the House of Representatives and was elected to the Senate in 2012, winning reelection in 2018 and 2024.

Reactions to Chris Murphy's hospitalization

Reactions to Senator Murphy's hospitalization came from both parties. President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation and asked about it by reporters at an airport in Iowa. "We don't like to hear a thing like that. He's a young guy. Nobody wants to have that," he replied.

Ned Lamont, governor of Connecticut, wrote that he had been with Murphy just a few days ago and that he wishes him a speedy recovery.

"There is no stronger advocate for our democracy, and no one who fights harder for the people of this state. Chris is a great friend to Connecticut and to me personally, and Annie and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers," he added.

Sen. John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke in 2022 during his Senate campaign, also spoke on the matter: "As someone who survived a near-fatal stroke, I understand all too well how much this impacts your life. My family is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery."

Several of Murphy's Republican colleagues also wished him a speedy recovery, including Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Pete Ricketts of Nebraska and Katie Britt of Alabama.
