Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis laid off approximately a dozen of his campaign staff, and more layoffs could be announced in the coming weeks.
Sources involved in the DeSantis presidential campaign reported that just two months into his canvassing activities, an internal evaluation determined that too many staff were hired too soon.
Even though the Republican candidate managed to raise $20 million for the campaign in just the first few weeks, costs had to be cut and mid-level employees were laid off in several departments.
The candidate's political entourage believes that campaign manager Generra Peck is to blame. "They never should have brought so many people on. The burn rate was way too high. People warned the campaign manager, but she wanted to hear none of it," a source familiar with the DeSantis campaign told NBC News.
Financial reporting
Campaign finance reports recently filed with the Federal Election Commission reveal that, although DeSantis was the Republican candidate who raised the most money for his presidential campaign, the Florida governor has already spent about 40% of the money he received on salaries.
During the first fundraising push alone, 92 people were added to the campaign payroll, which is well above the number of workers the other Republican candidates have.
Campaign reorganization
According to the NBC News source, the Florida governor seems inclined to change staff, which would not be surprising given that DeSantis already had three different campaign teams for each congressional bid.
