Boston: Man arrested for vandalizing cathedral crucifix

The subject is accused of assault and malicious destruction of property. He is expected to be arraigned in the city's municipal court.

The Boston Police Department reported that a man was arrested for vandalizing the crucifix of the city's cathedral, breaking arms of the statue of Jesus. Authorities detailed that they responded to a complaint that a man took a hat from another citizen and subsequently committed the act of vandalism. The accused was identified as Michael Patzelt, 37 years old.

"At approximately 6:14pm Officers assigned to District D-4 (South End) arrested Michael Patzelt, 37, of Attleboro for a Vandalism incident that occurred in the South End," police said in a statement published on its official website.

"The suspect then proceeded to climb up the cross where he began to swing and hang from it, breaking off several parts of the cross. The suspect broke both the statues arms prior to officers responding and placed him under arrest," police added.

It was learned that Patzelt was arrested and charged with "assault & Malicious destruction of property. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court."
