At least three people were killed, and two others were injured in a shooting in New Mexico. According to authorities, the incident occurred early this Monday morning in Farmington near a local church. Officers on The scene shot and killed the shooter, but his identity remains unknown.

The shooting began on Dustin Avenue between Ute Street and Apache Street. In addition to the three fatalities, two people were wounded, one Farmington Police Department officer and one New Mexico State Police officer, who were quickly treated for their injuries, and their condition is stable.

"Two officers were shot, one from the Farmington Police Department and one from New Mexico State Police, both currently at San Juan Regional Medical Center being treated for their injuries and in stable condition," the New Mexico State Police reported.

They further indicated that the shooter lost his life during his confrontation with law enforcement. "The identity of the suspect is unknown, and there are no other known threats at this time," they added in their message, initially broadcast on Facebook.

Due to the risk to the rest of the neighbors, the authorities temporarily closed the area until they could confirm that there was no other suspect and then reopened the streets.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) prayed for the victims' families and said she has ordered increased efforts to investigate the case. "Although details continue to emerge about this incident, this serves as yet another reminder of how gun violence destroys lives in our state and our country every single day. This administration will not stop fighting the epidemic of gun violence from every angle possible," she added.
