A new defeat for the left: Daniel Noboa becomes the new president of Ecuador

The center-right candidate achieved electoral victory against his opponent, the leftist Luisa González.

Center-right candidate Daniel Noboa Azin defeated the left and became the new president of Ecuador for the next 18 months.

With 90.56% of the votes counted, Noboa won the elections with 52.3% of the votes in his favor, surpassing his opponent, Correísta Luisa González of the Citizen Revolution party, who received 47.7% of the votes.

“Today we close a chapter, and tomorrow we begin to work for that new Ecuador to rebuild a country that has been seriously hit by violence, corruption and hatred,” said Noboa after emerging victorious.

González admits defeat

“Congratulations to those who did not vote for us, because the candidate you voted for has won (...) our deepest congratulations to the president-elect Daniel Noboa (...) this is a democracy, we will never come out shouting fraud,” said Luisa González, after recognizing Noboa’s victory.

After the results were released, national and international political leaders congratulated Noboa. Among those were the former presidential candidate of Ecuador, Otto Sonnenholzner and the Republican representative, María Elvira Salazar.

His proposals

Daniel Noboa, of the National Democratic Alliance, a center-right party, is a businessman and former legislator who, at 35 years old, has just become the youngest president in the history of Ecuador.

Noboa has a degree in Business Administration from New York University and a master’s degree in Governance and Public Communication.

Noboa proposed reducing violence and prioritizing socioeconomic development and job creation. Unlike his main opponent, he promised to safeguard and strengthen dollarization.

Likewise, in the midst of a context of social violence and an unstoppable increase in crime, Noboa promised to implement a measure against the most violent criminals by isolating them in barge prisons in the middle of the sea. He also presented the “Phoenix Plan,” which focuses on creating an intelligence center to prevent crimes and reinforce the security of citizens.

This Sunday, the Ecuadorian citizens elected the successor of Guillermo Lasso, who last May decided to dissolve the National Assembly and call early elections using article 148 of the Constitution, commonly called crossed death. This occurred after the opposition subjected him to impeachment for alleged misappropriation of public funds.
