Magnitude-5.1 earthquake hits Oklahoma

Several smaller aftershocks are being recorded on Saturday.

A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Oklahoma late Friday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The earthquake, whose initial recorded magnitude was 5.5, occurred at a depth of 3.7 miles, according to the EMSC. The National Geological Survey also set the magnitude of the quake at 5.1.

After the earthquake, several aftershocks were recorded, though none reached a magnitude of even 3.

The quake occurred at 11:24 p.m., with its epicenter east of Oklahoma City, in the center of the state. Several residents of the capital and cities such as Tahlequah, 180 miles to the east, reported feeling the earthquake, according to local media reports.

Three weeks ago, Oklahoma reported two days of seismic activity with earthquakes over magnitude-4.
