Who is the richest person in each U.S. state?

Only three states do not have a single billionaire. California, Texas, Florida and New York have the largest concentrations of wealth.

The United States continues to top the list of countries with the most billionaires. According to Bloomberg's updated ranking, Elon Musk once again became the world’s richest person at the end of May, overtaking France's Bernard Arnault.

Along with Elon Musk, many more Americans are in this select club. In 2018, Forbes magazine compiled a state-by-state breakdown for the first time, which made it possible to categorize the largest American fortunes based on the state of legal residence. Now, Voz Media checks and updates this list with 2023 data.

In each of the states, there is extreme wealth. However, in three states, there are no billionaires: Alaska, West Virginia and Delaware. California (179), New York (130), Florida (92) and Texas (73) are the states with the most billionaires.

In terms of wealthiest individual, Texas, Washington and Hawaii top the list thanks to Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Larry Ellison, respectively. Together with Warren Buffet, from Nebraska, and Larry Page, in California, they make up the top five in the list of states with the largest fortunes for a single individual or family.

Jeff Bezos narrowly overtook technology guru Bill Gates, who also resides in Washington, but who saw his fortune lose value in 2022. Gates remains third on the list of American billionaires. Sergey Brin is also not the wealthiest in California. Alphabet's biggest shareholder is separated by 4 billion from Larry Page.

Behind the United States in the number of billionaires per country are China, where 495 people reside with assets above $1 billion, India (169) and finally Germany, with 126 billionaires.
