Texas: one dead and at least five injured after a vehicle crashes into a hospital emergency room

The deceased is the driver who crashed into the health center. The causes of the accident are being investigated.

One person died and at least five others were injured after a vehicle crashed into a hospital emergency room at  St. David's North Austin Medical Center, Texas. Several sources from the Austin-Travis County Medical Center confirmed the event, which occurred on Tuesday night, after initially reporting that the number of injuries exceeded ten.

Hospital officials said at a news conference that emergency crews found several injured people at the crash site. One of them was the driver of the vehicle, who was declared dead after removing him from the vehicle and attempting to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation without success. For their part, several injured people were taken to area hospitals. A child and an adult were in critical condition. The fifth injured person was treated on site at the medical center itself.

Authorities said no details were available about the cause of the crash, but detectives were investigating.

The Austin Police Department previously reported in a post that there is "no threat to the general public" as preliminary investigations indicate that the accident does not appear to be "an intentional act."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he had offered the state's full support to Austin Mayor Kirk Watson in the wake of what happened. "State staff are working closely with local officials to ensure Austin has no unmet needs," Abbott said on social media.
