ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool, was temporarily banned in Italy due to privacy and data security violations.
The European country's Data Protection Authority pointed out that OpenAI, ChatGPT's parent company, collected citizens‘ personal data illegally and alleged that it did not have an age verification system in place to prevent minors from being exposed to illicit material.
ChatGPT to be temporarily blocked
Italian regulators have asked OpenAI to block access to the tool in the country until the company provides them with the additional information requested. For this reason, the technology company has a period of 20 days and must respond and offer possible answers to the claims.
After this, authorities in the country will make a final decision on whether access to the tool will be reinstated citizens' devices.
OpenAI has yet to comment on the matter. It could receive a fine of up to €20 million (about $22 million), or 4% of its annual revenues.
