Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, and his wife were sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of corruption in a case related to gifts he received, according to AFP, while he was in office. The Justice's decision came a day after Khan received a 10-year sentence in a case of leaking state secrets.
The politician was already disqualified from participating in the next elections, scheduled for February 8, due to a conviction for another corruption case handed down last year.
According to the news agency, it was not clear whether Khan will serve the sentences consecutively or simultaneously. Both sentences were announced inside Adiala prison, where Khan has been held for much of the time since his arrest in August.
This Tuesday, the former prime minister of Pakistan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for revealing state secrets.
Meanwhile, Khan has insisted that the accusations against him are due to a plot of political persecution. On his X (formerly Twitter) account, the politician said the decision is due to an "illegal" trial and makes "a complete mockery of law and justice in the country."
"My Pakistanis! "This is their war and this is their proof that they must take revenge for every injustice with their vote on February 8 while remaining peaceful," he highlighted in a message posted on the platform hours before the decision was known.
