At least seven Israelis were killed after a terrorist shooting attack in Jerusalem near a synagogue. Ten other people were injured. The shooting took place on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The information was confirmed by the Magen David Adom emergency medical services and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Those who were wounded were transferred to the Hadassah Mount Scopus hospital.
The terrorist was shot dead by Israeli security forces after attempting to flee the scene of the crime. According to police, the shooter waited outside the synagogue, located in the settlement of Neve Ya'akov, East Jerusalem, to open fire on the worshippers as they were leaving the building.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, was at the scene. His office stated that they were receiving continuous updates on the attack. Itamar Ben Gvir, Minister of National Security, was also present.
The United States condemned the attack via its Israeli Ambassador, Tom Nides, who assured that it was a "heinous" aggression against "innocent people."
The attack occurred on Holocaust Remembrance Day, a date that pays tribute to the victims of genocide carried out against Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II. The tribute takes place every January 27. That same day 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp.
