Soccer player Maddy Cusack died this Wednesday at the age of 27. Her club, Sheffield United, announced the news through a statement on social media. In the post, the women's soccer club said it was "devastated," although it did not provide details on what caused the player's death:

In July, the player renewed her contract with the team, which she had signed for in 2019 and where she also worked on the marketing team. Furthermore, explains Daily Mail, she had just been named vice-captain and had become the first player to play 100 games for the club. She posted about this achievement on social media : "6 years & counting… Really happy to have signed another deal with Sheffield United. Exited for the season!"

Her club was not the only one to announce the news. Her brother, Richard Cusack, confirmed the player's death on X (formerly Twitter):

The English Football Association (FA) also published a statement mourning the death of Maddy Cusack. Arsenal player Leah Williamson as well as Maddy Cusack's former team, Birmingham City, also expressed sadness over the player's sudden death:
