The officers were identified as Alex Diaz, a Hartford police officer, and Jon Escobar, a Rocky Hill police officer. Both were taken to a hospital after the confrontation and were later released. The incident began around midnight on Friday, August 21, when Hartford police officers were investigating illegal activity near 9 Fales Street.
During the investigation, a man fled on foot. An officer pursued him and attempted to apprehend him; during the struggle, the officer felt what he believed to be a firearm at the suspect's waist, according to authorities.
The man managed to escape and got into a vehicle. The officers began pursuing him and relayed the car's description to police departments in nearby towns. The chase continued south to Webster Court in Newington, near the Rocky Hill border.
There, officers stopped the vehicle. The suspect got out, and an exchange of gunfire ensued, according to police. The man was struck and died at the scene, while the officers involved received medical attention.
