Gibson, appointed White House ambassador to Hollywood, lost his home in January's fires.

Mel Gibson criticized Gavin Newsom's handling of the Los Angeles fires. The actor adds to the criticism that is weighing on the California governor. Newsom is not the only one under public scrutiny. Los Angeles officials fired the city's fire chief a week ago.
Gibson's criticism came on two occasions. In February, he participated in a press conference organized by SavingCalifornia.vote, a group opposed to Newsom. Gibson then accused the governor of "gross mismanagement." He claimed his inaction allowed the destruction of thousands of homes, including his own.
"We deserve much more and much better, and there is absolutely no adequate excuse the governor or mayor can make for this gross mismanagement and failure to preemptively deal with what they knew was coming," Gibson said, referring to Newsom and Bass, according to KTLA.
Earlier, in January 2025, he also spoke about the issue on "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast. He criticized the state's lack of fire preparedness and noted that Newsom had promised to improve forest management, but failed to deliver. "All our tax dollars probably went for Gavin's hair gel," Gibson joked.
The actor's criticism adds to that of other residents and public figures. Many question current authorities' ability to manage natural disasters. The Palisades and Eaton fires left thousands affected and left behind massive material damage.
Newsom has not responded directly to Gibson's statements. However, he has defended his management and assures that his administration has allocated resources for fire prevention.
