Sophia Loren has been admitted to a hospital in Geneva. This Sunday, the actress underwent emergency surgery after suffering an accident at her Swiss home. The actress, who turned 89 on Sept. 20, fell in the bathroom of her residence, causing her to fracture her hip and femur. A source close to Loren told The Hollywood Reporter that the actress was quickly taken to the hospital for the relevant check-ups and was diagnosed with fractures in her femur.

A spokeswoman for Loren explained hours later to Fox News that the actress is now out of danger, after a long surgical intervention, and she is currently recovering from her injury in a Geneva hospital with her sons Carlo and Edoardo at her side: "The surgery went well, and now we only need to wait. I have no additional information at the moment."

Loren now faces a short period of bed rest followed by a long recovery although, the actress' spokesperson said, doctors have "cautious optimism" and hope that she will make a full recovery.

The return of Sophia Loren

The injury couldn't come at a worse time for the long-time actress. Sophia Loren resumed her acting career in 2020 after 10 years of retirement, joining the cast of the Netflix film released that same year, "The Life Ahead."

In addition, she had a few commitments that had to be canceled due to the accident. In fact, news of her injury broke after the Oscar-winning actress had to cancel her attendance at the opening of a restaurant in Bari, Italy. It is fourth in the chain of Sophia Loren Restaurants owned by the actress.

The last public appearance of Loren, one of the last living actresses from the golden age of Hollywood, was on September 2, when she attended the Armani fashion show that took place at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival.
