Dictatorship of the Mind? Canadian court forces Jordan Peterson to receive "social media training" for his comments on Twitter
If the renowned professor, psychologist and writer refuses to take the classes, he could lose his medical license.
A Canadian court in Ontario is forcing Jordan Peterson to receive “social media training” because of comments the psychologist made on his social media accounts, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
The renowned psychologist, who serves as professor emeritus of the psychology department at the University of Toronto, explained that he was forced to comply with the order of the courts on Wednesday after three Ontario Divisional Court judges dismissed Peterson v. Ontario College of Psychologists lawsuit.
This academic body had accused Peterson of publishing diatribes on his networks that could violate their code of ethics.
“Remember when pride was a sin? And Ellen Page just had her breasts removed by a criminal physician,” is one of Peterson’s posts that generated controversy and caused the renowned psychologist to be suspended from Twitter in June 2022 for allegedly violating the rules of hateful conduct.
On another occasion that same year, the psychologist also criticized Sports Illustrated magazine for including an overweight model on its May cover: “Sorry. Not beautiful. And no amount of authoritarian tolerance is going to change that,” Peterson wrote.
After tycoon Elon Musk bought Twitter, Peterson was reinstated to the platform and has since been active, publishing conservative opinions almost daily.
Jordan Peterson: “If you think that you have a right to free speech in Canada you’re delusional”
Now Peterson denounces that the courts, academic institutions and the Canadian government itself are infringing on freedom of expression.
In fact, the professor wanted to make his position clear after he was forced to take the training in social networks: “If you think that you have a right to free speech in Canada, you’re delusional.”
He also promised to make public all the details about the training.
On Wednesday night, Peterson went further, suggesting that Canada’s government, led by progressive Justin Trudeau, fills institutions with “woke” censors.
“It’s worse than you think @elonmusk. My tweets criticizing the trans insanity and Justin Trudeau are the putative reason,” Peterson wrote to Musk, who reacted to the news that the psychologist was required to take social media training.
“The judges are progressives appointed by Justin Trudeau and all professionals in Canada are so terrified of their ‘professional’ regulatory bodies that they are terrified into silence. And even those who aren’t’t [sic] intimidated in that manner. Can’t afford the extremely expensive and endless fight. Not good,” added the respected professor, who took the opportunity to launch a funding campaign on the GoFundMe platform.
“It has become dangerous in Canada for professionals such as physicians, lawyers, psychologists and teachers to express their political opinions. In so doing, they risk running afoul of the regulatory organizations that were originally designed to protect the public, but have become increasingly captured by censorious “progressives,” pursuing an overtly political agenda, using the authority granted to such bodies to punish those whose opinions they deem unacceptable--even deplorable,” reads the petition. At the moment, it has raised more than $14,000.
The Ontario court’s order has raised controversy since yesterday, generating a wave of messages supporting Peterson, who has become a media figure in the conservative world for his videos, books and opinions against modern progressivism.
