Suspected Gilgo Beach murderer arrested
Between 2010 and 2011, law enforcement authorities found human remains on the beach in the New York town. Seven victims were identified.
Law enforcement authorities in Long Island, N.Y., have arrested architect Rex Heuermann for allegedly being responsible for the murder of several women between 2010 and 2011 in Gilgo Beach. The suspect pleaded not guilty to six charges filed against him.
In those years, New York police discovered human remains scattered on a road near a Long Island beach. Several victims were identified: Shannan Gilbert, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack, although it is suspected that the human remains found could belong to between three and 11 more people.
"It’s been a long time coming & I never gave up hope that one day justice would be served. I’m just happy it happened sooner rather than later. The suspect (Rex) deserves to rot in prison for the rest of his life. He destroyed many lives so while it won’t bring our loved ones back, it does help that one less monster is off the streets and he can’t ever hurt anyone else!" said Sherre Gilbert, Shannan Gilbert's sister, to NBC News.
