The House Republican Conference on Tuesday chose Tom Emmer (R-MN) as its new nominee for Speaker of the House. After five rounds of voting, he defeated his seven competitors. Now he needs to get 217 votes in the plenary session, something that Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise were not able to achieve. Within hours of his election, Donald Trump spoke out against the Minnesota Republican and not in the best way.

On Monday, hours before all the candidates would try to convince their Republican colleagues to vote for them behind closed doors, the former president said that he had a "good relationship" with all of them. Furthermore, he referred directly to Emmer, who he has clashed with in the past.

"I think he's my biggest fan now because he called me yesterday and said, 'I'm your biggest fan,' so I don't know anything about that. I have always gotten along well with him,” he declared in New Hampshire, to which the congressman responded on his X account, formerly known as Twitter: “If my colleagues elect me Speaker of the House, I hope to continue our strong working relationship.”

Emmer defeated Jack Bergman (MI), Byron Donalds (FL), Kevin Hern (OK), Mike Johnson (LA), Dan Meuser (PA), Gary Palmer (AL), Austin Scott (GA) and Pete Sessions (TX) in his quest for the nomination. Ultimately, as reported by POLITICO, he won against Johnson 117 to 97.

"Voting for a globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!"

Just hours after Emmer was elected, who is the highest-ranking Republican among the candidates, Trump posted about him on his Truth Social account. He described the now nominee is closer to Democrats and on a different wavelength than Republican voters.

"I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them. He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters," the former president wrote.

"I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that’s what it takes to win? The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that’s not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!", Trump concluded.
