Tim Scott will officially announce his candidacy for the presidential election on Monday, May 22. The Republican senator from South Carolina filed the necessary paperwork to run to be the next president of the United States this Friday with the Federal Election Commission and was quick to say that the official announcement would take place in just three days:

Scott, 57, is the only black senator to hold a seat for the Republican Party, and his name had been sounding for a few months for the presidential race. According to the AP, Scott has scheduled television ads to begin airing in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire next week.

However, he is not among the favorites. In fact, he does not have much approval in the polls. As reported by Reuters, only 2% of Republicans see him as president of the United States, and his national recognition further lowers the percentage.

Nationally, half of Republicans plan to vote for Trump, while another fifth are betting on DeSantis, who has not yet officially entered the presidential race but whose announcement is expected in the coming days. Less likely than Trump and the Florida governor is Nikki Haley, Tim Scott's major challenger, who launched her campaign in February.
