The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that a shooting in Washington, D.C. killed three people and injured two others.
Pamela Smith, the acting chief of local police reported at a press conference that the sounds of gunshots began to be heard around 8 p.m. Saturday in the 1600 block of Good Hope Road, southeast of Anacostia.
Department officers nearby were able to rush to the scene, but by the time they arrived, there were five victims, two of whom were transported to local hospitals and the remaining three were pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, police are unable to determine the motive for the shooting and are describing it as a senseless act of violence. Smith asked the community to provide any information they have about the shooting to authorities.
“We realize that there may be others who may have been injured tonight,” the acting chief mentioned. “We’re asking you to come forward,” she added.

Increase in violent crime
A recent MPD report showed statistics comparing crimes in 2022 with those that have occurred so far in 2023 (until August 4) and demonstrates that the homicide rate has increased by 21% and violent crimes are up 37%. The report clarifies that the data is subject to future variations due to determinations related to changes in crime definitions, amendments in classification or unfounded cases.

In Washington, DC, crime has become a serious crisis; in fact, the D.C. Council deemed it necessary to pass a law to support the fight against the serious crime crisis plaguing the District. The “Public Safety Amendment Act” would increase penalties for robbery and burglary offenders. It would also make it a felony to fire a gun in public. The law has more than a dozen reforms and amendments to the Penal Code to improve public safety.
