Court lifts ban on bullfighting in Mexico City

The bullfights scheduled for Sunday, February 4 and Monday, February 5 will go on as planned.

The Mexican justice system lifted the temporary ban on bullfighting in Mexico City. The bullfights scheduled for this Sunday and Monday (February 4 and 5) in Mexico City will go on as planned after a new judicial decision reversed last week's temporary suspension.

The Judiciary Council reported the news on Friday. The decision is not definitive. A hearing will take place on February 7 that will determine whether or not these shows will be definitively suspended in the Mexican capital. According to the ruling, "the social interest that justifies the suspension measure is not proven." The court added to the press release that "the social interest that justifies the suspension measure is not accredited, since with its granting, a whole series of activities and rights are negatively impacted, which at least until this moment constitute a legal activity foreseen in the law."

The company managing Plaza México is thrilled that the bullfights scheduled for Sunday and Monday will be able to go on as planned. In a statement reported by AFP, the company highlighted "its commitment" to the "traditions and cultural wealth" related to bullfighting. The company did not drop its litigation after a judge suspended the events last Wednesday. The ban had been lifted the previous Sunday in a large event with a full house at La Monumental under the motto of (LIBERTAD) FREEDOM.

The association Todas y Todos Por Amor a los Toros (All For the Love of the Bulls), which is working to put an end to bullfighting, warned that it will continue with its legal motions to have these fights definitively banned. "The substance of the matter has not been resolved. We will exhaust all legal means in the defense of animal welfare," they said in a statement released by Congressman Jorge Gaviño, coordinator of the Liberal Left Parliamentary Association of Mexico City.

Plaza México has bullfights scheduled until March 17 featuring people such as the French bullfighter Sebastián Castella or the Spanish bullfighters Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza and Andy Cartagena. The 42,000 fans will be pleased to be able to attend the spectacle for now.
