Brazil: Daycare teacher hid babies in a bathroom and saved them from deadly attack

The woman said that one of her colleagues alerted her so that she could take precautions during the attack.

On Wednesday, a children's daycare center in the Brazilian town of Blumenau, suffered a massacre at the hands of a 25-year-old man who broke in with an axe and killed eight people. However, the number of deaths could have been higher if one of the teachers had not hidden a group of babies.

Teacher Simone Aparecida said that during the attack on the school, she managed to lock the children in her care in a bathroom to prevent the man from having access to them.

Aparecida explained that a colleague alerted her, which allowed her time to hide the babies. The teacher stated that, after locking up the children, she chose to go to the playground where there were other students.

The attack

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. local time at the Cantinho Bom Pastor daycare center, a private educational center in the state of Santa Catarina, which at the time had 40 children inside.

The assailant, whose identity is not yet known, jumped over the wall of the institution with an axe in his possession and began randomly attacking the children, according to authorities.

The 25-year-old man killed a total of eight people, including teachers and students, four of whom were minors between the ages of 5 and 7. At least three other minors were also injured, authorities said.

The attacker fled directly after the attack. However, shortly thereafter he went to a Military Police barracks and turned himself in. So far, the motives of the attack are unknown, and the local police stated that an investigation into the case has been opened to clarify all the details.
