The U.S. consulate closes in Adana, southern Turkey, due to protests over the war in Israel

"Large demonstrations related to events in Israel and Gaza are expected throughout Turkey (...) U.S. citizens may reschedule their appointments at the Embassy in Ankara," the embassy said in a security alert.

Due to "large demonstrations related to events in Israel and Gaza," the U.S. Embassy in Turkey published a "security alert" announcing that the country's consulate located in the south (in the city of Adana) "will remain closed to the public until further notice":

The United States Consulate in Adana will remain closed to the public until further notice. U.S. citizens can reschedule their appointments at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.

"Large demonstrations related to the events in Israel and Gaza are expected throughout Turkey in the coming weeks (...) Any gathering, even those intended to be peaceful, could escalate and turn violent. "Protest activities may result in increased police presence, road closures and traffic disruptions," the alert stated.

The State Department has issued advisories from its embassies throughout the region, including those in Beirut and Amman, where there were similar advisories warning American citizens of ongoing protests, many of which have targeted American diplomatic compounds.
