Taylor Swift threatens legal action against Florida student for tracking her private jet

The singer's lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to Jack Sweeney, who manages several air traffic control accounts on social media.

Tracking celebrities’ jets is what Jack Sweeney does. The young student from Florida manages several social media accounts that provide detailed information on the whereabouts and details of celebrities’ flights. Some of these celebrities have gone as far as to threaten legal action against Sweeney, the most recent being Taylor Swift. The spotlight is on Swift as fans expect her to attend Super Bowl LVIII to watch her boyfriend Travis Kelce play.

This Tuesday, the singer's fans and entourage leaked a cease and desist letter that Swift's lawyers sent to Jack Sweeney. The letter, dated December 22, 2023, asks the young man to stop tracking her. In her lawyers’ opinion, his behavior is putting the singer's physical integrity at risk.

In the letter, lawyers from the Venable firm accused young Jack Sweeney of providing individuals intent on harming her, or with nefarious or violent intentions, a roadmap to carry out their plans." They cite episodes from the past in which people have tried to attack the famous singer. Ms. Swift has dealt with stalkers and other individuals who wish her harm since she was a teenager. Indeed, there are many public cases of individuals who have come to Ms. Swift's residences, including those armed with weapons and ammunition, and attempted to harm her."

Jack Sweeney provided this letter to The Associated Press. With it, he clarified that he has never intended to cause harm and that he firmly believes in the importance of transparency and public information. "one should reasonably expect that their jet will be tracked, whether or not I’m the one doing it, as it is public information after all," he said in the letter.

Banned from X

Some of the accounts managed by Jack Sweeney were once banned from the social network X (Twitter). Sweeney even had a confrontation with Elon Musk, who referred to him as "an awful human being." Jack Sweeney is supported by an entire community of air traffic control followers. He has nearly 12,000 active users on his Discord channel.

Jack Sweeney and his community’s work has exposed, on several occasions, the hypocrisy of many celebrities who advocate against the use of fossil fuels yet they travel on private jets.
