The Spanish newspaper Vozpópuli published exclusively the last text message from the Spanish politician Alejo Vidal-Quadras, 78, before undergoing surgery last week in Madrid, Spain. "If I die, it was Iran; protect my family," the co-founder of the VOX party wrote to a friend before beginning the surgery. He would have said the same thing to the doctors at the health center.
According to the same media outlet, Vidal-Quadras "did not explain, as he was not in a position to do so, whether the threats came from the Government or from an opposition faction." The conservative politician had already received threats from third parties.
Vidal-Quadras is recovering from a gunshot wound to the face that he received on Thursday of last week as he was about to get into a car in the Spanish capital, Madrid. The attack was carried out by two people who escaped on a motorcycle. Neither of them has been identified.
On the same day of the attack, local media outlets such as El Mundo, reported that the Police were investigating whether the attack was linked to his work as a defense lawyer for opponents of the Iranian regime. Also according to the local press, the former president of the Popular Party of Catalonia was blacklisted by the Iranian regime's Ministry of Foreign Affairs last year.
