Prime suspect in Gilgo Beach murders had up to 300 weapons hidden in his home

The collection found on Rex Heuermann's property included rifles, revolvers and pistols.

Rex Heuermann, the prime suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial murders, had a vault in the basement of his home with more than 200 weapons, including rifles, and revolvers, among others.

After authorities arrested Heurmann for the murders of several women, police entered the suspect’s Long Island home to check for further clues related to the case.

Although investigators were focused on finding body parts or some objects related to the crimes, police were surprised to find an arsenal inside a container behind a locked metal door. Police knew the 59-year-old man was an avid hunter, but they did not expect him to have between 200 and 300 guns in his family’s home.

“Anytime somebody has that type of arsenal, we have some concerns,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison.

The commissioner explained that they are now analyzing whether all these weapons were registered and legal, as before the registry was done, it was believed that he only had 92 weapons permits.

Another finding on the property

In addition to the weapons, authorities reported finding a child-sized blonde doll in a large wooden and glass box.

Although it is unclear whether the doll holds any meaning in the investigation, the officials found the manner in which this toy, often used recreationally by children, was stored to be peculiar.

“Right now, we have a flood of information and a flood of evidence coming in, and it’s going to take us a while to sort of go through all of that,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said after the searches.
