Former South African Paralympic athletics champion Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on parole and is "at home," according to the prison administration in a statement reported by AFP. He left Atteridgeville Prison, outside Pretoria, South Africa, in the early hours of the morning.
Pistorius was released from prison this Friday after serving part of his sentence for the murder of his girlfriend in 2013. The measure is taken after he served more than 10 years in prison for killing his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013. The convicted man fired four shots through a bathroom door, claiming that he believed there was an intruder in his home. Pistorius was initially convicted of manslaughter in 2014 and sentenced to six years in prison, but the case went through several appeals and was finally upheld to 13 years and five months in prison in 2017.
Oscar Pistorius will complete the remainder of his sentence in the community corrections system and will be placed under supervision in compliance with his parole conditions until his sentence expires. The former athlete, 37, is not authorized to speak to the press, according to the conditions established to grant him parole.
In South Africa, convicted offenders can apply for parole after serving half of their sentence. The famous ex-athlete has already fulfilled this requirement and was granted parole on November 24th.
