Mike Pence spoke about Jan. 6 at Turning Point Action conference: "I did my duty"

The former vice president assured that history will hold President Donald Trump accountable for the Capitol riots.

Mike Pence has no doubt that he fulfilled his duties as vice president on Jan. 6, 2021. He made this assurance during a conversation with Tucker Carlson at the Turning Point Action conference. The Republican primary candidate maintained that he has never referred to the events as an "insurrection," as some media repeatedly insist.

However, Pence insisted that for him it was a "tragic" day. "But I really do believe that a day of tragedy became a triumph for freedom. And I’ll always believe that by God’s grace I did my duty that day under the Constitution of the United States of America and our institutions held,” Donald Trump's former vice president assured.

He said that President Donald Trump's words were reckless and, in his opinion, put him and his family in danger. "I believe history will hold Trump accountable for that just as the law will hold everyone accountable that engaged in acts of violence."

This is not the first time Pence has lashed out at Donald Trump for what happened on Jan. 6. In March, the former vice president asked the justice system to charge Donald Trump as responsible for the riots that occurred at the Capitol. "President Trump was wrong. He had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable," Pence said during his speech at the Gridiron Club Dinner attended by journalists and politicians.

Mike Pence’s candidacy

Last month, Pence filed to run in the Republican primary. He did so by presenting himself as a conciliatory leader, capable of appealing "to the better angels of our nature." He said on Twitter, "I believe in the American people and I have faith God is not done with America yet. Together we can bring this country back, and the best days for the greatest nation on Earth are yet to come!"
