Mexico: A candidate for mayor was shot dead in the state of Michoacán

Miguel Ángel Zavala, candidate for the Morena party in the municipality of Maravatío, was shot while he was in his vehicle.

(AFP) A candidate for mayor of the municipality of Maravatío, in the Mexican state of Michoacán, was murdered this Monday, the prosecutor's office reported. The army and police confirmed the news to AFP.

Miguel Ángel Zavala, a doctor who was running for mayor with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Morena party, was shot on Monday afternoon while he was in his vehicle, sources indicated.

The attack occurred near the San Ángel clinic, located in the Rancho La Huerta subdivision, in the center of Maravatío.

Two hitmen got out of a white car, approached the victim and shot him at point-blank range. They fled in the same vehicle, according to testimonies collected by police.

The wave of violence linked to organized crime that is shaking Mexico also affects politicians, especially those who hold or are running for municipal and state office.
