Damian Lillard out indefinitely for the Bucks with deep vein thrombosis

The injury to the veteran point guard, a nine-time All-Star, is a major setback for the Milwaukee franchise, which had made its player's health a top priority.

Veteran Damian Lillard, a nine-time NBA All-Star, will be out indefinitely for the Milwaukee Bucks after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf.

"To ensure his health and begin the process to return to healthy play, Lillard is taking anticoagulant medication, which has stabilized the deep vein thrombosis, and will continue to have periodic testing," the Bucks said in a statement.

Lillard's health "number one priority" for Bucks

The 34-year-old point guard is averaging 24.9 points per game this season, and his presence alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo is crucial to Milwaukee's playoff aspirations, which begin on April 19. However, the Bucks emphasized that Lillard's health is their "number one priority" and are confident that the issue has been addressed in time to prevent it from reoccurring.

"Doctors have indicated that it is very unlikely that his situation will recur. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with recovery," said franchise general manager John Horst.

Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs' young star, was also diagnosed a month ago with deep vein thrombosis, this time in his right shoulder, which led to him being ruled out for the rest of the season.
