Soccer player Dani Alves was sentenced to four years and six months in prison for sexual assault. The decision from a Barcelona court was made due to the rape of a 23-year-old girl in a nightclub in the early hours of Dec. 31, 2022.

According to the ruling, which was accessed by AFP, the judges considered "it proven that the victim did not consent and that there are elements of evidence, in addition to the testimony of the complainant, to understand the rape as proven."

In addition, it was learned that the court imposed an additional five years of supervised release, a restraining order for the victim for nine and a half years, and compensation of 150,000 euros (roughly $160,000).

Despite the decision, the case is not over. The 40-year-old former FC Barcelona and PSG soccer star can appeal the sentence.

As during the oral trial, held between Feb. 5 and 7, Alves was taken this Thursday to the Barcelona Court in a police van from the Spanish prison where he has been held for 13 months to receive the sentence.
