A mob of youths stormed a gas station in Compton, California, on Sunday. Faced with police inaction, the youths stole all the products from the store in a matter of minutes before fleeing. The events took place on the same weekend that flocks of youths wreaked havoc on the streets of downtown Chicago, causing major riots.

In videos circulating on social networks, it can be seen how an agglomeration of teenagers and young adults gather at a gas station at night. The most crazed begin to break the glass doors of the store. When two masked men manage to open the entrance, the mob bursts into the store and swarms all over the products on the shelves.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), two other gatherings of youths occurred in the Compton area during the same night. No arrests were made by the Sheriff's Office. The participants in this assault have also not yet been identified.

The local television channel ABC 7 has shown testimonies from several Compton neighbors who claim that the uncontrolled gatherings of young people in the streets are recurrent in the area. A neighbor told the channel that the intersection where the gas station that was robbed is located, Alondra Boulevard and Central Avenue, is the scene of large gatherings of young people and cars at least two or three times a week.

Youth sowing chaos

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has been reported as saying that in the area, according to ABC 7. The LASD claims to be working to respond and intervene quicker in these situations, despite the lack of personnel. Los Angeles County has been experiencing an increase in burglaries since 2021.

On the same weekend, major riots also involved large concentrations of young people in Chicago. Large groups wreaked havoc in the Loop district, causing extensive damage to vehicles and street furniture. An unconfirmed number of bystanders and tourists were attacked and two people were wounded by gunfire. The police were unable to control the riots.
