Housing crisis and unemployment in New York City
Despite the city's multi-million dollar income, a significant percentage of the population suffers from homelessness.
The lights, the giant screens, the skyscrapers, the luxurious shopping malls and Broadway often create a false idea of New York. While the city receives massive revenues each year from tourism and investment, there are Americans in the City That Never Sleeps who do want to sleep but have no place to do so.
According to a WalletHub study, the homeless rate in New York is 9.3 per 1,000 residents. These figures are similar to those of other large cities with homelessness problems, such as San Francisco and Washington.
On the other hand, the report also assessed unemployment rates, which may partly explain the housing crisis in New York. One key factor is that 6.8% of the city's labor force cannot find work.
More cities in the state in trouble
As for the rest of New York State, other cities also showed disturbing percentages: in Rochester, for example, 48.2% of children live in poverty. In addition, unemployment is up to 25%, one of the worst in the country.
Another city that ranks at the bottom of the ranking is Buffalo, N.Y. The western city, hit by the recent storm, had the fourth highest rate of youth poverty, with 42.3% of minors living in such conditions.
