Snow and storm arrive in the Northeast

Snowfall occurred in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Tornadoes in the middle of the country left one dead in Oklahoma.

Some 50 million people remain on alert due to the winter storm that is sweeping the country. The National Weather Service (NWS) activated the alert for snowfall and low temperatures throughout the Northeast, in the states of Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island. This alert will be extended until Tuesday afternoon.

This Tuesday, a blanket of between three and five inches of snow covered New York, while Boston got more than six inches. The brunt of the storm was borne by Vermont, where as much as 10 inches of snow was recorded.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont urged caution: "I strongly encourage everyone in Connecticut to stay off the roads on Tuesday morning unless absolutely necessary."

The NWS reported that slabs of ice will form in northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. In Massachusetts, many school districts delayed opening due to heavy snowfall that made it difficult to travel to school. Governor Maura Healy ordered staff members to stay home except in case of necessity. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency urged caution behind the wheel in the face of road complications:

Hazardous travel expected during the Tuesday AM commute -- if you must be on the road, take extra caution and make sure your car is stocked with emergency supplies.

Due to snowfall and strong wind gusts, U.S. airports experienced more than 470 flight cancellations and nearly a thousand delays, according to FlightAware.com. The condition of the runways prevented aircraft from landing and taking off.
