The United Kingdom is considering recognizing a Palestinian state to reduce tensions in the Middle East
UK Minister of Foreign Affairs David Cameron is committed to pursuing this solution along with the United States.
Almost four months has passed since October 7, when the war between Hamas and Israel broke out after a surprise attack by the terrorist group that killed hundreds of civilians and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. The United Kingdom announced that it is evaluating the possibility of recognizing a Palestinian State in the Middle East.
The statement came from Foreign Minister David Cameron who spoke with AP during his visit to Lebanon where he tried to lower tensions between both countries.
Although he clarified that eventual recognition would be impossible as long as Hamas remains present in the region, he indicated that "can’t come at the start of the process, but it doesn’t have to be the very end of the process."
"It could be something that we consider as this process, as this advance to a solution, becomes more real. What we need to do is give the Palestinian people a horizon towards a better future, the future of having a state of their own,” said the former British leader.
According to Reuters, the United States is also interested in the creation of a Palestinian State to lower tensions in the Middle East. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated on Wednesday that they would first ensure Israel's security and the stability of the region.
"We are actively pursuing the establishment as an independent Palestinian state, with real security guarantees for Israel, because we do believe that is the best way to bring about lasting peace and security for Israel, for Palestinians and for the region," he said at a press conference.
"There are any number of ways that you could go about accomplishing that. There are a number of sequencing of events that you can carry out to accomplish that objective. And we look at a wide range of options and we discuss those with partners in the region as well as other partners inside the United States government,” he added.
