The Department of State (DOS) issued a global alert to all American nationals who are outside the country “due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests" following the attack by the Hamas terrorist group in Israel:

The statement also advises U.S. citizens to "stay alert in locations frequented by tourists" and asks that they enroll in the "Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas." This is a program to "allow U.S. citizens/nationals traveling abroad to enroll with the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate."
The warning comes amid widespread unrest and violent protests taking place around the world due to the war in Israel. Many U.S. Embassies, Consulates and other facilities have been attacked this week, some even deciding to temporarily close their doors.
