Guatemala: Bernardo Arévalo wins presidential election

Alejandro Giammattei, the current president, congratulated the winner and promised to organize a meeting at the presidential house.

The preliminary results of last Sunday's elections indicate Bernardo Arevalo will be the next president of Guatemala. With 58% of the vote, Arevalo comfortably edged out former first lady Sandra Torres' 37%.

The country's attorney general's office, however, is reportedly trying to suspend the Seed Movement Party, according to AP. After learning the results, Arévalo said he wanted the strength of his victory to serve as evidence that there was no room for attempts to overthrow the result.

The Seed Movement party faced some challenges in advancing to the second round. After winning the first round in second place, behind Torres, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal suspended the party. Finally, the country's highest judicial authority, the Constitutional Court of Guatemala, allowed the party to compete in the elections.

The current Guatemalan president, Alejandro Giammattei, congratulated Arévalo and promised to organize a meeting at the presidential house "the day after the results are made official":
